As winter’s peak lurks before us, snow days are bound to be seen for students at Salem Community Schools. Principal Troy Albert spoke about what causes snow days and what student procedures are.
“The central office will make the call for inclement weather,” Albert said. “Students are asked to watch the morning news on your local TV channels, check the website as well.”
SCS has four snow days built into the school year that will be used before eLearning snow days are put into play.
During eLearning snow days, students will follow a Google meet schedule for all of their classes. The classes will be held virtually and directed by each teacher. Students should check their Google classroom for the invitation to attend class.
“Remember that lack of participation in the eLearning day could require us to extend the school year with additional days. Attendance will be taken by attendance of the Google meet each period of the school day. Teachers should have shared their expectations as well in each classroom,” Albert said.
Michelle Medlock, a history/geography teacher, explained that she likes snow days for the most part. She appreciates that the school still has the ability to complete the school day rather than using make-up days.
“They [students] should keep in mind that both teachers and students still have a job to do,” Medlock said. “Teachers are to provide materials, and continue the subject students are studying, and students have a responsibility to learn the material to the best of their ability.”
Medlock explained that she has worked hard for eLearning days to make sure whatever she assigned was of value to her subject, but not egregious in the time that it should take to complete.
“My expectations are that students respect my time and complete the work I set out for them,” Medlock said.
Senior Amelia Mather explained why she enjoys snow days.
“I think that the way we learn during snow days is effective and allows us extra time to study.”
