Over the years, teachers at Salem High School have created ways to get students involved through clubs that cater to their interests, passions and career goals. Recently, a new club has been added to the list: Film Club.
Started by film-enthusiast John Heavin, students will have a hands-on learning experience as they collaborate with other students to create short films. Heavin said that he wants to “hit the ground running,” and allow the students to learn the creation process as they go, such as envisioning, script writing, scene blocking, filming and editing. Thanks to the REACH grant, the club members will be able to learn these building blocks, along with learning how to use the proper equipment and expanding their creative abilities.
The club’s focus is to help students learn the basic process of film production and to “actually create films.” Heavin said that he hopes to include film studies, where they will watch critically acclaimed films as a guide, because “looking at the work of a master can certainly be beneficial.” In the future, he also hopes to enter the members into competitions once they have shown a thorough grasp of how the production process works.
The Film Club’s first meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 9, after school in room 24 until 4:30. If anyone has an interest in art, writing, cinematography, editing, directing or just having a good time, please feel free to join. You can also contact John Heavin if you have any questions.
Hope to see you there!
